Readers respond with Elks info

Several readers responded to the request for information on the Traverse Area Historical Society archive photo that appeared Nov. 26 in the Community section. The photo was identified as an Elk's Old Timers meeting, circa 1950.

Jim Tompkins believes the man pictured in the front row, second from right, is Art Winnie. Tompkins says the longtime Traverse City barber operated a shop in the 200 block of Front Street. Tompkins also recalls that Winnie was well-known for trout flies that he hand-tied at the barbershop.

William Shutler e-mailed his thoughts on the identity of another Old Timer at the meeting. "The third gentleman on the right hand side of the pic looks very much like my grandfather, William E. Shutler, who was an Elk for a long time in TC," Shutler wrote.

Retired state Sen. George McManus e-mailed another possible identity for the gentleman pictured third from right. McManus believes the man is Traverse City Area Public Schools Principal and Central Grade School auditorium namesake Lars Hockstad.
