Leaving Chicago Monday night, the steamer Missouri arrived in port shortly after noon Saturday on her last trip for the season of 1908. The steamship had a very rough trip, although she was fortunate in crossing the lake last night, consuming only 12 hours from Cheboygan to Traverse City, making several stops enroute. There is a serious break in the sheet piling at the mouth of the Boardman River, about 15 feet, almost in the center of the east pier, having been washed away. The current, in the two years the piling has been driven, has been gradually working deeper. If repairs are made at once, the job will not be very expensive. (Plus more news from 1908.)

In Kalkaska County the forest fires were bad Saturday, the flames getting into large tracts of timber owned by the Oval Wood Dish Co. of this city and causing considerable damage despite the efforts of every available woodsman. The company cannot estimate its damage yet as complete reports have not been received. (Plus more news from 1908.)

Two court cases of interest to area residents were heard earlier this week. The jury brought in a verdict of guilty in the case of the People vs. Gilbert Olsen and Joseph Ramsey who were charged with breaking and entering a store. In the case of the People vs. Bruno Maus, the prisoner stood mute and a plea of not guilty was entered. (Plus more news from 1908.)

R. J. Mercer & Co. of this city have secured the contract for plumbing, heating and ventilating the new school building which has just been built at East Tawas. The contract covers an amount of $5,000. The firm should be congratulated as they competed with firms in Grand Rapids, Muskegon, Saginaw and also firms all over Northern Michigan. Having served in the infantry, cavalry and navy during the Civil War, Adolphus Bowman, now an aged man of 70 years, today made application for a pension of $15 per month under the new age law. The house on the Riley Dargin farm, a mile and a half north of Bates, occupied by William Gibson and his son and their families, was burned to the ground last week, the origin not known. The house while built 28 years ago was still in good condition, the interior finish being hardwood. The loss is about $1,500 with no insurance. (Plus more news from 1908.)

Among the passengers on the steamer Leelanau which met with such a disaster Monday morning was a family of Polish people. The mother and several children had been rowed out to the steamer by a son and the son had not yet reached shore when the explosion occurred. Seeing a woman in the water and thinking it was his mother, he went back with all possible speed and found that she was safe. (Plus more news from 1908.)
